Every campus visit looks the same by the third school: an info session, a walking tour, a dining hall. What families actually remember is what surrounded it. Athens is a college town wrapped in Appalachian foothills, and the fifteen minutes between Court Street and a valley full of woods is the part that makes the case.

Practically, it also gives a nervous seventeen-year-old somewhere to decompress and talk it through without an audience.

  • Eight minutes to campus — a 9:30 a.m. welcome session does not require a 6 a.m. alarm.
  • Room for the whole family — three bedrooms plus a loft, sleeping up to six. Younger siblings come free of a second hotel room.
  • A kitchen — a two-day visit with a kitchen costs a fraction of one with six restaurant meals.
  • Somewhere to actually talk — a fire pit and two decks beat a hotel lobby for the "so what did you think" conversation.

Make it two nights, not one

Most families book one night, tour in the morning and drive home by two. The families who book two nights see Athens on a Saturday — the farmers market, Court Street when students are actually on it, Strouds Run — and that is the version of the town your student is deciding about.

Daily campus visits run about three hours, which leaves most of a day. Our things-to-do guide is what we hand guests: trailheads, breweries, breakfast, all with the drive time from the cabin door.

Orientation and move-in weekends book up too

Bobcat Student Orientation runs through the summer and is required for incoming students, and August move-in fills every room in the county. Both are worth booking as soon as your date is assigned. Direct guests hear about openings before the platforms do.

Campus visit questions

Where should we stay for an Ohio University campus visit?

Athens has limited hotel capacity, and Ohio University points visiting families to the Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau, which lists cabins as well as hotels. Art Park Cabin is eight minutes from the Athens campus and sleeps up to six, which is usually cheaper than two hotel rooms for a family.

How long is an Ohio University daily campus visit?

About three hours. It includes a group information session led by an Undergraduate Admissions representative and a walking tour of campus. Some academic colleges offer an additional college-specific visit on the same day.

What is the difference between OHIO Up Close and a daily campus visit?

A daily campus visit is open to any prospective student and covers the application process and a campus tour. OHIO Up Close is an event specifically for admitted high school seniors and their families, with academic department meetings, a residence hall visit, housing and financial aid information, and current-student panels.

Can our whole family stay, including younger siblings?

Yes. Every booking is the entire property — three bedrooms plus a loft, sleeping up to six. The rate is $250 a night for two guests and $25 a night for each additional guest, so bringing two younger siblings adds $50 a night rather than a second hotel room.

Is it worth staying two nights for a campus visit?

We think so. The tour takes about three hours, which leaves most of a day. A second night lets your student see Athens on a normal weekend — the farmers market, Court Street with students on it, the state park — which is the part a tour cannot show you.
